Naming Culture

Naming traditions and our identity

Naming; an important parental discussion that could possibly determine the future, self esteem and self identification of their child. Ever notice that popular names change constantly, and certain names are commonly equated to a certain ethnicity/gender/religion? The namesake inspired me to research other naming techniques used around the world, and how traditions influence this determining step.

Canada- In my own country I noticed that names are so diverse because of our vast mix of cultures. Typically, names are simply preferences of the parents, and middle names honor family (Kelly, PocketCultures). My middle name comes from my grandma and my aunt-“Ann”.

Argentina- Longer ago, Argentina naming traditions typically consisted of reusing the parents names after each generation (Ana, PocketCultures). Now they have modernized and differentiated their naming techniques, however this tradition does still live on.

Costa Rica- Children born here are often given four or even five names that correlate with Saints sharing their birthday (Nuria, PocketCultures).

India- As seen in The Namesake by Jhumpa Lahiri, names are chosen based on places of belonging, a profession and/or ancestors (Anu,PocketCultures). From the novel, “Ashima’s grandmother, who is past eighty now, who names each of her other six great grandchildren in the world, do the honors”(Lahiri 25)

Poland- Polish naming follows christian saints (Jenna, PocketCultures) which is a good example of how religion in different countries can influence popular names.

Romania- Naming traditions here include naming the child after a grandparent or godparent when they are baptized (Carmen, PocketCultures).

Diversity in the world is so unique and I find a tradition as simple and under looked as naming is a great example of showcasing that! Comment any more naming traditions you know of and add to my list.
